After completing all religious rites and formalities, Pope Francis has been laid to rest. He was buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, located outside the Vatican boundaries.
This marks the first time in the past 100 years that a Pope has been buried outside the Vatican.
According to Vatican authorities, more than 400,000 people attended Pope Francis’s final ceremony on Saturday (April 26).
Following the final prayer procession, the Pope’s coffin was transported to the burial site.
The coffin was carried in a procession from Vatican City to the Santa Maria Maggiore church in Rome, covering a distance of about six kilometers (approximately four miles).
Ordinary people were allowed to watch the funeral procession from behind barricades placed along the route, but they were not permitted to walk directly behind the procession.
About 3,000 volunteers were deployed along the route to provide guidance, medical aid, and water supplies.
