Prominent Bangladeshi Barrister Turin Afroz Arrested Under Mysterious Circumstances

Dhaka, April 7, 2025 —
Renowned legal scholar and former prosecutor at Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal, Barrister Turin Afroz, was arrested on Monday in Dhaka under unclear circumstances.

Police officials have confirmed her detention but have yet to provide any details regarding the grounds for her arrest or whether formal charges have been filed. The operation was conducted discreetly, with no official statement or press briefing from the authorities.

Barrister Afroz is widely respected for her outspoken advocacy on justice, human rights, and legal reform. As a former prosecutor, she played a key role in several high-profile war crimes cases and has continued to contribute to national discussions on transitional justice.

Her unexpected arrest has sparked alarm among human rights advocates, legal professionals, and civil society organizations both within Bangladesh and internationally. Many are urging authorities to uphold transparency and ensure due legal process.

“This is highly concerning,” stated a senior member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, who requested anonymity. “Detaining a prominent legal figure without explanation raises serious questions about the state of justice and the rule of law.”

Since the news broke, social media has been flooded with calls for her release and demands for clarity. Hashtags like #FreeTurinAfroz and #JusticeForTurin have been trending across platforms, particularly among legal and activist circles.

Barrister Afroz’s legal team and family have yet to issue any public statement.

This is a developing story; further updates will be provided as more information emerges.
