Awami League Stages Protest March Rejecting Ban Demand; Three Arrested

In Bangladesh, Awami League staged a public protest march in the capital, rejecting demands for the party’s ban. On Friday, March 21, after Iftar, hundreds of Awami League leaders and activists took to the streets in Dhanmondi. During the demonstration, three individuals were detained after being chased down by BNP activists and subsequently handed over to the police. Witnesses reported that the detainees were beaten before being taken to Mohammadpur Police Station.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Laboni, a central member of the Jubo Mohila League. However, the party positions of the other two detainees, Sirajul and Raju, were not immediately confirmed. The marchers were chanting slogans such as “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” One protester at the front of the march was heard shouting, “Everyone, come down to the streets.”

Shortly after Iftar, a procession of 15-20 Awami League activists started marching on Road No. 27 in Dhanmondi. According to the police, BNP activists disrupted the march and dispersed the protesters, detaining three individuals in the process.

Confirming the incident, Mohammadpur Police Station’s duty officer, Sub-Inspector Shamim Reza, stated, “From what we have gathered so far, an Awami League procession was moving along Dhanmondi 27. At that time, BNP members chased them down and handed three individuals over to the police. They are currently being interrogated.”
