Young Man Arrested for Harassing an American Woman in Bangladesh

A young man named Tarekul Islam (25) has been arrested at Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh for allegedly harassing an American woman.

On Monday afternoon, police arrested Tarekul in the Jhautola area of the city. The woman’s husband works for a UN agency in Cox’s Bazar, and she is living there due to his job.

Incident Details

According to the police, the incident took place at 8:15 AM on Circuit House Road, where the woman was out for a walk. Tarekul allegedly followed her, attempted to start a conversation, and later forcibly grabbed her. The woman raised an alarm, and Tarekul fled the scene.

Upon receiving the complaint, police launched a six-hour search operation and arrested him at 5 PM from a hideout in Jhautola.

Previous Criminal Record

Cox’s Bazar Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Elias Khan stated that Tarekul was previously arrested in 2022 for raping a child. A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and he was jailed for several months before being released on bail.

Legal Proceedings

Following that day’s incident, a case has been filed against him for sexual harassment. He denied the allegations during preliminary questioning.
