WASHINGTON, June 12, 2026 — Social media giant Facebook and its messaging platform Messenger experienced a major global outage on Friday evening, leaving millions of users unable to access key services.
The disruption began at around 7:30 p.m. Bangladesh time, with users across multiple countries reporting difficulties logging into Facebook, loading news feeds, and sending or receiving messages through Messenger.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports of service problems surged sharply as the incident unfolded, indicating that the disruption was affecting users on a global scale.
Many users took to alternative social media platforms to report that Facebook had become inaccessible or was functioning only partially. Messenger users also complained of delayed or failed message delivery.
Facebook outages of this magnitude are relatively rare. While Facebook and Messenger were affected, some other services owned by Meta appeared to remain operational.
As of Friday night, Meta had not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage or providing an estimated timeline for full service restoration.
The incident comes as billions of people worldwide rely on Facebook and Messenger for communication, news consumption, and business activities, making even short disruptions highly noticeable.
