Shanghai, June 9, 2026 — China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, the Adora Magic City, has embarked on the country’s first-ever destination-free cruise voyage, departing from Shanghai and returning to the same port without stopping at any domestic or international destination.
The special three-day, two-night journey began on Saturday from Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Port and is scheduled to conclude early Monday morning. Unlike conventional cruise itineraries, the vessel remains entirely at sea throughout the trip, allowing passengers to focus exclusively on onboard leisure and entertainment.
Passengers have been enjoying a variety of activities, including stand-up comedy performances, magic shows, themed parties, and late-night dining experiences. To ensure a more comfortable environment, passenger numbers were limited to 80 percent of the ship’s total capacity.
One traveler, identified only by the surname Hu, described the voyage as a relaxing experience that did not require taking additional leave from work. She said she was particularly interested in experiencing the country’s first large cruise ship built with domestic technology.
According to organizers, the average age of passengers on this voyage is 47, notably younger than the average age of 55 typically seen on standard cruise routes.
Shanghai authorities issued China’s first entry-exit permit specifically designed for destination-free cruises on Friday. Simplified customs and border inspection procedures for passengers were also introduced ahead of the vessel’s departure.
The voyage reflects the rapid growth of China’s cruise tourism sector. Official statistics show that the country’s cruise passenger traffic increased by 25.3 percent in 2025 compared with the previous year.
Industry observers believe the introduction of destination-free cruises could attract travelers seeking shorter, more flexible vacations while boosting domestic demand for cruise tourism.
