China has once again called on the United States to stop selling weapons to Taiwan, insisting that the Taiwan issue is purely an internal matter and warning against foreign interference.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Zhang Han, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council, said peaceful reunification remains the “best path” toward national unity under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.
Zhang said reunification would strengthen the cultural identity and sense of belonging among the people of Taiwan, while helping eliminate what he described as “confusion about history” and an “ambiguous cultural identity.”
He also argued that reunification would create significant economic opportunities for Taiwan’s cultural industries. According to Zhang, Taiwan’s film, television, music and publishing sectors would gain easier access to mainland China’s vast market, along with greater policy and resource support.
The spokesperson further said reunification could help Taiwanese society move beyond long-standing political divisions and ideological conflicts.
“After reunification, Taiwanese people will have the support of a strong motherland wherever they go in the world and will no longer be used as pawns in geopolitical competition,” Zhang said.
During the briefing, Zhang also expressed dissatisfaction over Taiwan’s military procurement budget and reiterated Beijing’s opposition to foreign involvement in cross-strait affairs.
China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has repeatedly condemned US military support and arms sales to the island. Meanwhile, Washington maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan and continues to provide defensive military equipment under its longstanding policy commitments.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions between China and the United States over regional security, trade and influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
