Lawyers aligned with the Bangladesh Awami League secured a sweeping victory in the Madaripur District Bar Association election, winning 14 out of 15 posts. However, in a notable exception, an independent candidate affiliated with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won the president’s position. Meanwhile, no candidate backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) managed to secure any post.
Chief Election Commissioner Farhad Hossain announced the final results at around 11:00 PM on Thursday at the Bar Association office.
According to the results, Emdadul Haque Khan was elected president, defeating district BNP convener Zafar Ali Mia by 77 votes. In contrast, Awami League-backed Mahabub Hossain (Shakil) won the general secretary post by a large margin, defeating Rezaul Karim by 156 votes.
The senior vice-president post has resulted in a dramatic tie, with both Anwar Hossain and Jalalur Rahman securing 130 votes each. As per election rules, the winner will be decided through a recount or a lottery.
Other elected office-bearers include Vice-President Mahbub Hasan; Joint Secretaries Shakila Parvin and Mashiur Rahman Parvez; Treasurer Sujan Bhowmik; Library Secretary Munir Hasan; and Moharar Secretary A.K.M. Azizul Haque Mukul. The five executive member posts were won by Syeda Tahmina Khanom, Enamul Haque, Abdus Salam, Iqbal Hossain, and Abu Sufian. Additionally, Badrun Nahar was elected unopposed as the Entertainment and Hospitality Secretary.
According to lawyers, while one post was uncontested, the remaining positions saw intense competition. However, the final outcome reflected clear dominance by Awami-leaning candidates. The victory of a Jamaat-affiliated candidate in the president’s post remained the key talking point.
Election Commission sources said voting was held in a festive atmosphere from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Out of 300 registered voters, 293 cast their ballots. The election was conducted under tight security.
