Ivy Shown Arrested in Fresh Murder Case Over Student Protest Violence

Date:

Former Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has been shown arrested in another murder case filed over incidents during the anti-discrimination student movement, police confirmed on Friday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehdi said Ivy was shown arrested in connection with a murder case filed with Siddhirganj Police Station over the alleged burning death of interior worker Selim Mondol. The court approved the police application on Thursday, allowing authorities to show her arrested in the case while she remains in custody.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident occurred on July 20, 2024, at Chittagong Road, where a fire broke out on the ground floor of a Dutch-Bangla Bank building. At the time, Selim Mondol and two other workers were carrying out interior decoration work inside the premises. All three reportedly died from burn injuries.
On July 30, 2024, a farmer named Wazed Ali filed a murder case (Case No. 41) with Siddhirganj Police Station over the incident.

The case is being investigated by Sub-Inspector Mashum Billah of Siddhirganj Police Station. He said that during the course of the investigation, allegations of Ivy’s involvement in the killing of Selim Mondol emerged, prompting police to seek court permission to show her arrested in the case. The court accepted the plea.
Police officials noted that since Ivy is already in jail, the court’s order allows her to be formally shown arrested in this new case.

Earlier on Thursday, Ivy secured bail in five cases, including those filed with Fatullah Model Police Station over the alleged murders of bus driver Abul Hossain Miji, Abdur Rahman, Md. Yasin, and Parvez, as well as another case filed with Sadar Model Police Station over obstruction of government duties and assault.

Ivy was initially arrested in the early hours of May 9 last year from her ancestral residence, “Chunka Kutir,” in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj. She has remained in jail since then.
In November last year, the High Court granted her bail in five cases, but the Appellate Division later stayed that order. On November 18, she was shown arrested in five additional cases filed with Fatullah and Sadar police stations.
