Washington, January 16, 2026 — The United States is determined to reach an agreement with Denmark over Greenland, and such a deal is inevitable, according to US Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry.
Speaking to Fox News, Landry said President Donald Trump is “serious” about bringing Greenland under US control, emphasizing that Washington views the vast Arctic territory as strategically vital for national security.
“I believe that once the current situation is resolved, an agreement on Greenland should happen — and it will happen,” Landry said.
He added that President Trump has already made his conditions clear to Denmark. “The president has clearly communicated what he wants. Denmark knows exactly what is being asked of them,” the envoy stated, noting that the next phase of negotiations would be led by Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Landry also confirmed plans to visit Greenland in March.
In recent days, President Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is essential to US national security. The ice-covered territory, which is an autonomous region under Danish sovereignty, is believed to contain vast reserves of critical minerals, further increasing its strategic importance.
The renewed US interest has raised concerns in Europe, as Denmark has consistently maintained that Greenland is not for sale.
