Kolkata, May 4, 2026 — India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a landmark victory in the West Bengal legislative assembly elections, bringing an end to the 15-year rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

According to early results and official trends, the BJP is closing in on the 200-seat mark in the 294-member assembly, while the TMC has been reduced to double digits—marking one of the most dramatic political turnarounds in the state’s recent history.

The outcome largely aligns with pre-election exit polls, many of which had forecast a clear advantage for the BJP. Banerjee had previously dismissed these projections, expressing confidence that her party would secure more than 220 seats. The emerging results, however, indicate a significant electoral setback for the incumbent leadership.

Political analysts describe the outcome as a decisive shift in voter sentiment across the eastern Indian state. The BJP made substantial gains not only in its traditional strongholds in North Bengal but also in regions long considered TMC bastions, including Medinipur and Bardhaman. Key urban centers such as Kolkata and Howrah also recorded notable swings away from the ruling party.

The campaign was dominated by pressing issues such as unemployment, corruption allegations—including a high-profile teacher recruitment scandal—and concerns over law and order. The BJP framed the election as a referendum on governance, while also accusing the TMC of engaging in minority appeasement.

In contrast, the TMC leaned heavily on regional identity and cultural messaging, promoting the slogan “Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chay” (Bengal wants its own daughter). The party also warned that a BJP victory could threaten local customs and food habits, including non-vegetarian traditions.

Despite the unfavorable trends, Banerjee has urged her supporters to remain calm, noting that multiple rounds of vote counting are still underway. In a video message, she called on party workers to stay patient and resilient.

The victory is a significant boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, which has long sought to expand its footprint in eastern India. For West Bengal—a state known for its rich cultural heritage and politically vibrant history—the result signals the beginning of a new political chapter.
